Hi, I'm Cappy Shapiro, LICSW.
I work with trans, queer, questioning, and non-binary kids, teenagers, adults, and their families.
In my role as a therapist, I value connection, safety, and humor. In our time together, I can help you to define your wellness and support you in getting there.
There are many benefits to therapy.
- Improve your self worth
- Feel your feelings
- Identify and address repetitive negative thoughts
- Learn to cope with stress
- Improve your communication and assertiveness skills
- Cultivate a sense of community
- Navigate parenting a child of any age who has come out to you as trans, non-binary, or is questioning their gender
- Improve communication among family members
- Identify helpful community resources and information
A little about my professional background:
I received my MSW from Smith College School for Social Work in Massachusetts. For over a decade, I have practiced social work in a variety of community settings in Utah and Washington State. As one of the original therapists at the Utah Pride Community Counseling Center, I helped to develop and run programming for trans adults, teens, and preteens.
Values that I bring to my work as a therapist
- Queer liberation
- Racial justice
- Eco-consciousness
- Accessibility
Therapy that I provide gets into systemic and cultural issues, like racism and transphobia, and how they affect our identities, stress, emotional wellbeing, and our relationships.
I love telehealth because it reduces our emissions from traveling, and because it makes therapy accessible.
Therapy has personally helped me to confront my greatest challenges. Therapists have helped me to process grief and loss of parental rejection; they have also helped me to make repairs; to learn and relearn how to be present; to remember my self worth; to help me accept and manage emotions that I have found to be unacceptable and unmanageable. Therapists have helped me navigate relationships difficulties and difficult relationships, make hard decisions, and manage stress. Therapists have helped me mend and prioritize my most precious relationships, and let go of others.
Therapy could help you to address these issues and get unstuck.
Today, I am grateful to love myself, and to feel a sense of belonging in my community. I am strengthened and moved by feeling love and belonging in my family. I also love my work, and witnessing the growth of my clients.
I live a dream life I never could have imagined as a kid. Cultural shifts, community, therapy, and family have helped me get there. Still striving for queer liberation.
I love getting outside and playing in the trees and the dirt with my five year old. I am a novice beekeeper and gardener.
I am a licensed social worker in Washington (LIC#LW60842485)
